AccessAble Ambassador Interview - Tanvi Vyas

Tell us a bit about yourself

I am a freelance Disability Equality Consultant and Trainer. I live in London with my husband Dan. I am a full-time powerchair user and love going out, meeting friends, family and colleagues, and travelling across the UK and abroad. I am on a number of accessibility panels which are primarily transport related and I am a Trustee for Muscular Dystrophy UK.

Do you have any Access Needs when attending events or visiting somewhere new? If so, what are they?

I need step-free access into and around premises and the use of accessible toilets and good signage and information in advance.

Which of AccessAble's features are most useful to you?

The wide range and high level of detailed information is brilliant. The photos on the mobile app and the way you can filter by location is really helpful. I see myself as travelling and discovering places quite spontaneously, but know that I face so many barriers in order to actually get in and enjoy them! The app enables me to hone in on locations and streamline places I might like to go whilst I am on the move. This gives me plenty of choices and more freedom.

Where are you most likely to use the guides?

I'm likely to use them when planning a day or night out, when attending a hospital appointment and when visiting somewhere you've never been before.

As an Ambassador, what's been your favourite project to be involved in?

Ok, so it probably seems like I’m avoiding the question- but I have genuinely loved being involved in each of the projects so far. They are so unique, and creative and I feel like they’ve made an impact. The AccessAble Team are really supportive, and the people I’ve worked with so far seem to be genuinely committed to making change happen. This is what gives me so much motivation- so thank you!

What do you like to do in your spare time?

Going out with my friends, my family, and work mates- this usually involves eating good food and/or going for cocktails! I enjoy going to my seated exercise classes when I can- including seated yoga and tai chi.

I am also a bit of a nerd and enjoy visiting museums and art galleries. I like travelling to new places, exploring nature and the outdoors and love visiting the cinema and theatre when I get the chance.
