Volunteers Week - Spotlight on AccessAble Champion Ed Rex

During Volunteers Week we want to highlight the work of our fantastic Volunteer team of ‘Champions’. Each day this week we will feature some of our Champions as well as giving you information on how to join our team of UK ambassadors.

Today we are featuring Ed Rex AKA The Deaf Traveler

Ed is profoundly deaf in both ears, wearing a hearing aid in one ear and a cochlear implant in the other. Throughout his solo travels in the last seven years, he has noticed a keen interest from other travellers about his deafness throughout the world and in the UK and how his deafness influences his travelling experiences through different transport, activities and accommodation. From the bad to the good and to the downright hilarious, he often tells his story to many destroying stereotypes, discrimination and raising awareness to support deaf travellers.

Commenting on his AccessAble Champion role, Ed said:

'It's absolutely refreshing to work with an organisation who puts hearing loss on their agenda, to serve the 11 million people in the UK with deafness and hearing loss. It's been exciting to find out what accessibility options are there in the tens of thousands of venues in the UK'.

The Champion role is a voluntary position, which gives access to occasional paid opportunities to create content for AccessAble. Ed is one of our 20 strong volunteer team who spread the word about AcccessAble and the vital work we do.

Champions share regular blogs and vlogs about using AccessAble to find accessible places to go, as well as attending our events and speaking to the media about AccessAble’s work in their region.

Their support makes a huge difference. If you’d like to become a Champion, please contact us at [email protected], or call 01438 842710.
